Fixed
Bridgework
This is the best way to replace missing teeth when there is a tooth present
on either side of the space caused by the extraction of a tooth or teeth;
the other way being implants. A fixed bridge is a combination of crowns
(caps) and artificial teeth that is made in one rigid piece. The crowns
are "cemented" onto the teeth and hold the bridge in place. Advantages
of the fixed bridge are:
-
Extremely functional - Chewing efficiency is
95% to 100% as compared to natural teeth. This compares to about 30% for
complete dentures and 50% to 60% for removable partial dentures.
-
Cosmetic - Made from metal covered with porcelain
or all ceramic. No clasps or wires showing.Places the least stress on the
teeth it "hooks onto" of any prosthesis.
The area to receive the artificial teeth must have
strong adjacent teeth. Both ends of the bridge must be supported.
The teeth that will hold the bridge are prepared for crowns. This is done
by reducing 2 to 3 millimeters of tooth structure on all four sides and
the biting edge. An impression or mold of the teeth is taken and a temporary
bridge is constructed.
The dental laboratory fabricates the fixed bridge. It is adjusted and "cemented"
into place by the dentist.
