Crowns
Crowns can be made of metal, ceramics or a combination
of both. A crown is used to restore the entire crown of the tooth. A well
made crown will restore the crown of the tooth to the way it was before
damage occurred and restore ideal shape function and appearance. They are
necessary when:
-
loss of tooth structure from decay or trauma is so extensive, a filling
is impossible
-
a posterior tooth needs to be lengthened or shortened
-
cosmetic result is important
The treatment for a crown consists of removing
2 to 3 millimeters of tooth structure from the four sides and the biting
edge. An impression or mold of the teeth is taken.
A dental laboratory fabricates the crown from a model
poured from the impression. The crown is adjusted and "cemented" over the
tooth restoring it to ideal shape and function.
